2022 Winter Student for Whakauae Research Services - Ema Tuakoi

He rangi tā matawhāiti, he rangi tā matawhānui.

A person with narrow vision has a restricted horizon; a person with wide vision has plentiful opportunities

I am currently in my last year at Waipapa Taumata Rau – The University of Auckland, studying towards a Bachelor of Science (Psychology). Next year, I intend to continue into postgraduate studies. My career intention is to become a Clinical Psychologist, incorporating Mātauranga Māori and Pasifika values into therapy for Māori and Pasifika rangatahi.

I believe that my own ethnically diverse background, mixed with that of my hometown, South Auckland, has allowed me to recognise the increase in productivity when we apply a range of cross-cultural, Māori and Indigenous knowledges to any kaupapa.

I am incredibly honoured to be the 2022 Winter Student for Whakauae Research Services. Working under Dr. Tanya Allport, I will be completing a literature review that includes an annotated bibliography and a thematic analysis within a written review. This literature review will contribute to a project titled “Capacity and capability building of the Māori research workforce”.
