This year's ANZEA Conference provided another great opportunity for sharing ideas and extending evaluation networks. Held in Tāmaki Makaurau during July 2018, the Conference showcased a raft of innovative developments in evaluation. Inspirational keynote speakers included Dr Jess Berentson-Shaw from ‘The Workshop', youth educator Marcus Akuhata-Brown and prominent US-based evaluator, Dr Katrina Bledisloe.
Gill Potaka Osborne and Lynley Cvitanovic participated in the Conference, and in the pre-Conference workshops, co-presenting a session with Associate Professor Margaret Cargo (University of Canberra). The session focused on the Aotearoa New Zealand results of the STEPS (Strengthening Evaluation Practices in Indigenous Settings in Australia and New Zealand) study. This collaborative study is being conducted by a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners on both sides of the Tasman. The team is led by Dr Amohia Boulton and Associate Professor Margaret Cargo. In the week prior to the Conference, Margaret joined Whakauae in Whanganui. She facilitated a workshop for staff on the concept mapping methodology being used as part of the STEPS study.
Whakauae also sponsored Emma Rawson to participate in the Conference, along with the pre and post-Conference workshops. During 2017, Emma was contracted by Whakauae to carry out STEPS data collection with evaluators in the Auckland region. In 2016, she was the recipient of Whakauae's inaugural postgraduate Pae Tawhiti Scholarship. Emma expects to complete her masterate later in the year.
