We are delighted to announce that Dr Logan Hamley has joined the Whakauae team in the dual roles of Senior Researcher and Intern Lead. Logan (Ngāti Rangi and Whanganui) has recently completed his doctorate entitled Whakapapa, "the box", and beyond: poems, (re)presentations and the potentiality of rangatahi tāne identities in Auckland, which explores “the diverse strategies rangatahi tāne use to craft a positive identity in dynamic and often fluid ways.”
As a Senior Researcher with Whakauae, Logan will be undertaking an HRC-funded Emerging Researcher First Grant titled Expanding Connection: The Process of Reconnection for Māori Youth. This project will investigate the barriers and enablers of reconnection to culture for Māori and explore the myriad ways that cultural connection is expressed. This topic is fascinating, given the immense diversity of Māori lived realities, and we know the insights Logan will uncover will be invaluable.
In addition to his research, Logan will act as Intern Lead, a role envisioned as part of our Independent Research (IROC) Capacity platforms. The position of Intern Lead provides mentoring and support for emerging researchers, interns, and students. The role also facilitates connections with Māori university students, supports succession planning, and manages responsibilities for hosting overseas students, thus contributing to the sustained growth of Māori research capability and capacity. Logan’s expertise and enthusiasm will be invaluable in fostering a new generation of researchers dedicated to making a positive impact in Māori communities.
We are thrilled to have Logan on board and look forward to the contributions he will make to our team and the broader research community.
